Ruminal Bolus

The ruminal bolus is a RFID chip (FDX-B) sealed in a ceramic capsule, which is then placed in the reticulum of the animal. The RFID chip remains in position throughout the animal’s life and is almost impossible to dislodge or remove. While an ear tag has to be replaced several times during the life of a cow, the advantage of using a bolus is that it stays in the reticulum for the duration of an animal’s life. Today, this RFID solution is widely employed by farming operations throughout the world. This, combined with automation systems, such as milking machines and national databases, the bolus has helped many breeders improve the profitability of their farms.
